With a lot of the country facing tough water restrictions and shortages, rainwater tanks and greywater systems make a lot of financial and environmental sense.
Rainwater tanks are perfect for collecting and storing all the rain that would normally be lost to the storm water system. While it cant be used for drinking unless it meets the National Health and Medical Research Councils standards, rainwater is perfect for lots of other household purposes such as:
- Washing your car
- Watering your garden
- Additional fire protection
The size of your tank will determine whether you need to obtain a building license to install it, so check with your local council before you go ahead.
Did you know that an average Aussie family produces around 80 litres of greywater a day? Greywater is water generated from domestic use like washing clothes, doing the dishes or having a bath. The good news is that greywater can be recycled, treated and put to use irrigating your gardens or even flushing your toilet.
In 2009, the Federal Government introduced the National Rainwater and Greywater Initiative which provides rebates for installing approved tanks and greywater systems. The website has a lot of interesting information about choosing the right recycling method for your needs, so its well worth a read.
Solar Hot Water Systems
With an average home spending about 25% of their energy bill on heating water, installing a solar hot water system wont just save your tenants money; it will also help reduce their household greenhouse gas emissions by about 3 tonnes a year.
The good news for Landlords is that they can receive $1000 for installing a solar heater thanks to the Federal Governments Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme.
