Going away over Christmas? Things you can do to secure your rental home

If you’re planning a little trip over the festive season, it’s important to make sure your home is safe and secure. Here are a few things you can do to protect your home.

  1. Check locks on doors and windows
Test and ensure that all the locks on doors and windows are in working order, and that you have the necessary keys to open them. If there are issues with any of your locks, security screens or flyscreens, be sure to let us know now so we can organise to have them fixed.
  2. Lights
Use timer switches to turn lamps on and off periodically, or ask a friend or family member to drop by every few days to turn on different lights.
  3. Have someone check your mail
Don’t let your mail overflow in your mailbox – this is a telltale sign that the house is unoccupied. Ask a neighbour or friend to collect your mail for you. If you are going to be away for an extended period, ask the post office to put a hold on your mail.
  4. Tell your neighbours
Do you have a good relationship with your neighbours? If you trust them, let them know your itinerary and ask them to keep an eye on your home.
  5. Check your insurance
Before you pack up your car and head off, give your insurance company a call and check your home coverage. Make sure you have the right level and that all your valuables are covered on your policy.
