Autumn tips – get your home ready for winter
The weather is slowly starting to cool down, which means winter will be here before we know it. Take advantage of the sunshine and tackle autumn to-dos before the weather turns nasty.
In the garden
– Autumn is a great time to get out into the garden to prepare for the cooler months. Here are a few simple things you can do now that will put you in good stead when winter rolls around.
– Give your garden a tidy. Prune, shape and clean up your plants now. After a long, hot summer they’ll need extra attention to get them set for winter dormancy and spring growth. Get rid of yellowing or dead leaves and straggly lower branches. While you’re tidying, check for any pests and attend to them where necessary.
– Banish weeds. Get rid of as many weeds as possible now, as some varieties run rampant over winter. If you have some particularly stubborn, hard-to-pull weeds, you can smother them with weighted-down newspaper or even drown them in boiling water (be careful not to wet yourself or other plants, though).
– Feed your plants. Plants need good-quality fertiliser to really thrive. There are lots of different types on offer, for every type of garden, so do a bit of research to determine what’s best for your situation.
Inside your home
Use this time to do a once-over of the property and check for any small issues that could get worse over the cold, damp months. Keep an eye out for:
– potential damp issues
– ventilation problems
– drafty windows
– noticeable leaks.
