In 2009 new smoke alarm regulations (Building Amendment Regulation 2009) came into effect, stating that all rental properties must be fitted with hard-wired (mains-powered) smoke alarms.
While its the landlords responsibility to ensure that smoke detectors are installed in your home, its the tenants responsibility to regularly test the unit and change the batteries.
Testing your smoke alarm is really easy to do. Each smoke alarm has a large TEST button on the face all you need to do is push this test button once every three months (using the handle of a broom works the best). If the smoke alarm is working it will emit a short, sharp beep. If its not working, you need to get in contact with us as soon as possible.
Smoke alarms require minimal yearly maintenance. Just remember to replace the batteries annually and clean the unit by running the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner over the grill to remove any dust.
