Tenant Fined For Breaking Rental Laws

A woman from Stratton has been fined $950 for leaving the property she was renting in a dirty state of disrepair and failing to provide a forwarding address to the owner.

Annie Driscoll, Commissioner for Consumer Protection, believes this prosecution acts as a warning to tenants about their legal responsibilities.

Under the Residential Tenancies Act, the owner of a rental property should be ‘no worse off’ as a result of any breach by the tenant. In this case it wasn’t to be as the repairs to the property cost nearly $6000.
