As the weather starts to warm up, we want to remind you about bushfire season. The temperatures will be soaring soon and this – combined with the strong, gusty winds that Perth is known for – will provide the perfect environment for bushfires.
As the owner of a rental property, it is your responsibility to ensure that your property is bushfire ready.
Here are five things you need to do now to put your property in the best position to survive a fire:
- Make sure your home has a 20-metre circle around it that’s free of debris, rubbish and long grass. This ‘circle of safety’ is extremely important because a fire will ‘starve’ if there is nothing for it to use as fuel.
- Ensure that your home has the appropriate firebreak for your location. Under Section 33 of the Bush Fires Act 1954, local governments may issue notices requiring owners to install firebreaks and undertake hazard reduction. This involves clearing all the vegetation from the boundary of your property. Most local councils have specific firebreak information on their websites.
- Embers can enter your property via holes in the roof space, under eaves, windows, external vents, skylights or evaporative air-conditioners, so it’s important to fill the gaps.
- Keep gutters and valleys free of tree leaves, bark and detritus.
- Don’t store gas cylinders on the side of the house that faces bushland.
