Greening your rental property – Part One

With utility costs soaring a lot of property owners are looking for ways to make their homes energy efficient and more appealing to eco-conscious renters. This part one of our three part series highlighting things you can do to create a greener rental property.

Use Energy efficient bulbs
The cheapest and easiest way to reduce household energy consumption is to replace conventional globes with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFL’s). CFL’s use 80% less energy and last 4 – 5 times longer than standard incandescent light globes.

Plant a native garden
Recent dry winters and tough water restrictions have been a catalyst for many property owners to reconsider their approach to landscaping. Native plants are perfect for Perth because they’re low maintenance, resistant to common pests and they don’t need to be watered as often. With sprinkler bans and rosters continuing into the future, a garden that requires the least amount of water (and upkeep) is a very appealing idea.

Install water restricting products
Aerators, flow restrictors and water-efficient showerheads are excellent tools for saving water and reducing energy costs. If you’d like more information about the water saving products currently on the market, check out the handy Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme website.
